Eight veterans, including five former servicemen from The Times readership area, received the 2016 Congressional Veteran Commendations during a ceremony Thursday in Ottawa's City Hall.

Presented by Congressman Adam Kinzinger in front of a packed City Council chamber, the Congressional Veteran Commendation award is used to formally recognize outstanding veterans each year throughout congressional districts.

Local honorees include Wayne Eichelkraut Jr., of Ottawa; Glen Borvansky, of Marseilles; John Dubach, of Ottawa; Mervin Eutis, of Grand Ridge; and 98-year-old World War II Army veteran Glen Maubach, of Blackstone.

Before the presentation, Kinzinger explained a veteran can be nominated for a number of reasons, such as an outstanding service record, veteran leadership and advocacy after their service, and/or providing community leadership after their service.

"The eight veterans receiving this commendation have served this country honorably and fought for the freedoms we hold dearly," Kinzinger said, repeating much of what he read into the Congressional Record on June 22 in the House of Representatives. "These veterans answered their country's call during WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and they served with honor and distinction.

"After these veterans served their country, they came home to serve their communities. They are civic leaders, active citizens and many continue to serve their military brothers and sisters through veteran service organizations.

"And, although their mission has changed since returning to civilian life, their leadership and tenacity have not."
