WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) today released the following statement after President Obama announced that the Department of Defense will officially begin contingency planning for a possible full drawdown of American troops from Afghanistan:

“As America’s influence continues to recede around the world due to the Obama Administration’s lack of cohesive foreign policy and reluctance to vigorously pursue our nation’s interests abroad, we simply cannot afford to waver in Afghanistan. President Karzai may be a difficult partner, but we owe it to the Americans who gave their lives for our cause to seek the best resolution available. A full withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan would erase our hard-won progress and open the door to chaos and violence. We have seen in Iraq the results of a precipitous troop drawdown, and it would be irresponsible to ignore that lesson in Afghanistan, no matter what diplomatic obstacles we face.”
