WASHINGTON, DC – Early this morning, news broke that Russia has released Ukrainian military pilot, Nadiya Savchenko.  Savchenko denied all accusations and plead not guilty to murder charges, but was sentenced to 22 years in a Russian prison.  The President of the United States, leaders of the European Union, and several officials, including Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), have previously demanded her release.  Upon hearing the news, Congressman Kinzinger released the following statement:

“There is a reason Nadiya Savchenko is called ‘the hero of Ukraine.’  I’m impressed by her bravery, her resilience, and her determination in standing up for a free Ukraine.  Her release from unjust imprisonment is great news, and I’m glad to see this fellow Iraq war veteran land safely, and freely, back in Kiev today.  I’ll continue to keep Nadiya, her family, and the people of a free Ukraine in my thoughts and prayers. As I’ve said before, Ukraine has friends here in America, and we will continue to fight for their freedom.”

Congressman Kinzinger has introduced legislation to help the people of Ukraine and to thwart Russia’s stronghold over the region.  Examples of such legislation are provided below:

H.Res.758 – Strongly condemning the Russian Federation

H.R.5094 – STAND for Ukraine Act

H.R.5181 – Countering Foreign Propaganda and Disinformation Act
