Congressman Adam Kinzinger is co-sponsoring legislation that would provide American consumers with clear, accurate and meaningful nutrition information.

The bill, which was introduced by Kinzinger, Congressman Kurt Schrader of Oregon, and Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas, will help prevent the issuance of inaccurate labels that misleads consumers and drive-up prices.

The Accurate Labels Act would amend the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act to ensure consumers continue to benefit from the nutritional and allergy information on packaging today.

Kinzinger said in a statement that consumers deserve full transparency on the products they are buying, no matter where they live or shop.

He also stated the Accurate Labels Act is a commonsense measure to ensure consumers have clear and accurate product labels.

The measure would establish science-based criteria for all additional state and local labeling requirements and allows state-mandated product information to be provided through smartphone-enabled “smart labels” and on website, where consumers can find up-to-date, relevant ingredients and warnings.

Additionally, H.R. 2022 ensures that covered product information is risk-based.

This legislation is supported by the Coalition of Accurate Product Labels, which includes the American Chemistry Council, the Grocery Manufacturers Association, and the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, among others.
