Expanding the Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area
Congressman Kinzinger and most of the Illinois House Delegation reintroduced legislation to expand the National Heritage Area (NHA) in Illinois that honors the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln.
Washington, DC – Today, Representatives Adam Kinzinger (IL-16), Cheri Bustos (IL-17), Mike Bost (IL-12), Rodney Davis (IL-13), Robin Kelly (IL-2), John Shimkus (IL-15), Bobby Rush (IL-1), Danny Davis (IL-7), Darin LaHood (IL-18), Dan Lipinski (IL-3), Bill Foster (IL-11), Jan Schakowsky (IL-9), Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL-8), and Sean Casten (IL-6) reintroduced legislation to expand the National Heritage Area (NHA) in Illinois that honors the life and legacy of America’s 16th President, Abraham Lincoln.
This bipartisan legislation, the Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area Amendment Act, would add Livingston County, the City of Freeport in Stephenson County, and the City of Jonesboro in Union County to the Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area (ALNHA) to ensure all sites of Lincoln’s legal career and the Lincoln-Douglas debates would be included. Illinois has a rich and fascinating history, and is notably called the ‘Land of Lincoln’ because of our strong ties to the 16th President and his career.
As a proud Illinois native, Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) released the following statement after reintroducing this NHA legislation:
“Preserving our nation’s history is critical for future generations and for our own understanding of the people, places, and events that shaped America. A role model for many, Abraham Lincoln is one of our nation’s most revered leaders. We must preserve his life and legacy for its historical importance, the education of our youth, and our growing tourism. President Lincoln understood and upheld our values of freedom, opportunity, and equality, and his life continues to teach and guide us today. I’m proud to join my Illinois colleagues in reintroducing the Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Amendment Act for the 116th Congress, and thank our Senate counterparts for their support. It is our responsibility, and honor, to strengthen the mission to preserve Lincoln’s legacy here in Illinois.”
