WSPY News: Kinzinger's Legislation to Punish Russia for Pipeline
A local lawmaker’s legislation will punish Russian attempts to undermine the Ukrainian Economy.
Congressman Adam Kinzinger recently applauded the agreement reached by the House and Senate on the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act, which includes legislation authored by Kinzinger that imposes sanctions to counter Russian efforts to complete the Nord Stream 2 Pipeline.
Lawmakers believe that completion of the Pipeline will allow Gazprom, Russia’s gas-export monopoly, to entirely bypass transit systems in Ukraine, which would be a serious blow to the smaller nation’s economy.
In a statement, Kinzinger described Russia as trying to weaponize its energy industry. Kinzinger’s legislation was co-sponsored by Representative Denny Heck, a Democrat of Washington and Greg Pence, a Republican of Indiana. The 2020 National Defense Authorization Act is expected to be signed into law by President Trump.
