Congressmen Kinzinger and Boyle respond to the current offensive being carried out by Assad in Idlib, Syria.
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressmen Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02) and Adam Kinzinger (IL-16), Co-Chairs of the Friends of a Free, Stable and Democratic Syria Caucus, issued the following statement on the current offensive being carried out by the Assad regime, prompting mass human displacement in Syria:
“In a war that has lasted nine years, the Assad regime continues to target civilians through its “scorched earth” advance to take complete control over all of Syria. Under a constant barrage of bombs being indiscriminately dropped on Idlib, the city has been mostly leveled. Assad and his Russian backers are taking out homes, schools, hospitals, and entire communities in their quest for power.
“In the last two months, over half a million people have been displaced, most of which are women and children. This is the largest exodus of Syrians since the war began in 2011. Innocent people are running for their lives with nowhere to go, while thousands continue to suffer as prisoners of Assad’s death camps in Damascus. This crisis deserves our attention.
“We cannot continue to turn a blind eye to the suffering of the Syrian people. It is well-past time for a robust humanitarian response from the international community, and the United States should be leading on this issue.”
