Washington, DC – On Friday, the Office of the Inspector General for Illinois’ Department of Human Services released their investigative report on the COVID-19 outbreak at the LaSalle Veterans Home in November 2020. The full report can be found here.

On the blistering findings from the investigation, U.S. Congressman Adam Kinzinger (IL-16) released the following statement:

“After reading the investigative report on the outbreak at the state-run LaSalle Veterans Home, it is quite clear that Governor Pritzker and his Administration have failed the people of Illinois and my constituents in LaSalle. It is appalling to read how unprepared our state-run facilities were and how long it took to get any kind of support to the veterans. The lack of communication between the agencies and the ignoring of proper protocols is negligent and unacceptable.

“After learning of the outbreak at the beginning of November, my office set up briefings with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs and received a readout from their site visit with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) on November 13, 2020. It was clear from the briefing and subsequent calls that for whatever reason, there seemed to be no urgency in seeking additional resources as veterans were dying and the outbreak was rapidly spreading. And while the Governor was able to inject confusion into the situation to avoid accountability at the time, the report confirms our concerns. And as a result, 36 veterans died because of their ineptitude.

“Our veterans deserved much better than this and their families deserve answers from Governor Pritzker. His dereliction of duty is deeply irresponsible and has endangered our most vulnerable population. This is failed leadership.

“I want to thank State Senator Sue Rezin and the State House Members for their commitment to ensuring we have full transparency and accountability, and I support their calls for additional committee hearings on the matter. My office and I will continue to offer our support to the veterans in our community as we work to navigate this devastating situation.”
