Washington, DC – Congressman Adam Kinzinger (IL-16) released the following statement after the State Department announced new sanctions on the Russian sponsored Nord Stream 2 pipeline:

“I applaud the decision by President Biden to finally enact congressionally mandated sanctions to prevent Nord Stream 2 from ever becoming operational. Together, with the hard work of our Senate Republican colleagues, we not only passed the Protecting Europe’s Energy Security Act (PEESA), but strengthened it through the passage of the Protecting Europe’s Energy Security Clarification Act (PEESCA). While the President has been authorized to carry out these sanctions since his first day in office, he has failed to act until now, when Russian troops were actively invading Ukrainian soil.

“From the poisonings of Victor Yushchenko, Alexander Litvinenko, and Sergei Skripal, to the assassination of Boris Nemtsov, western inaction to respond to decades of brutality has only emboldened Vladimir Putin.

“To those praising Putin as a strong leader, you are wrong and severely misguided. He’s an authoritarian who has brutalized millions and plundered the wealth of everyday Russians to the coffers of his family and his oligarchs.

“To those equating criticism for President Biden as un-American, you are equally wrong and misguided. The facts remain that the Obama/Biden administration allowed Putin to occupy Crimea and the Donbas. Now, we’re watching the Biden/Harris administration allow the further occupation of Ukraine.

“The reality is this: Vladimir Putin is a thug who only responds to strength. History has shown that weakness only invites aggression. Unless the United States develops a long-term strategy to counter Russian aggression, Vladimir Putin will continue to erode democracy around the world.”
