Rep. Kinzinger Statement on the Killing of Ayman al Zawahiri
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Lieutenant Colonel in the Air National Guard, released the following statement on confirmation that the U.S. government has killed Ayman al Zawahiri, the current leader of al Qaeda, in Kabul.
“The successful U.S. operation to take out Ayman al Zawahiri, a founding member of the jihadist movement al Qaeda, longtime deputy to Osama bin Ladin, and one of the key strategists behind the international campaign of terror that culminated in the September 11 attacks on the U.S., is a moral and actual victory in making America safer. I congratulate the President for making the call and the intelligence community for executing this mission. While we should celebrate this victory, I urge the Biden Administration to remember that someone will replace al Zawahiri, just as he replaced Osama bin Ladin. Even though this operation showed the ability of American Over the Horizon capabilities, we must be clear eyed that technology cannot replace assets on the ground. The U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan emboldened al Qaeda to think we can be beaten. The removal of Zawahiri will stiffen al Qaeda’s desire to attack and kill Americans simply because of who we are. We must remain vigilant in defending our nation from those who threaten the American way of life.”For more on this topic, you can find Congressman Kinzinger’s latest interviews on these issues on his YouTube page.
